Unlocking Creativity and Connection: The Joy and Benefits of Online Art History Courses

Most people know the names of Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh, but far fewer can name a female artist. For centuries, systemic barriers such as exclusion from art academies, restricted professional opportunities, and societal expectations kept women artists from receiving public recognition. Even today, the imbalance between male and female representation in the art world impacts contemporary women artists.

Celebrate Famous Women Painters: Global Art Journey

In celebration of Women's History Month 2023, Art with Friends embarked on a global journey to honor the significant contributions of women artists. We virtually explored different regions, highlighting three extraordinary and famous women artists who defined the contemporary art scene in their respective countries. We also invited Bridget Quinn, a distinguished art historian and best-selling author on women artists, to talk about Scandinavian artists past and present.

Our journey included an exploration of Olga de Amaral's fusion of tradition and modernity in Colombian textile art, Doris Salcedo's powerful sculptures, and Beatriz Milhazes' mesmerizing canvases in Brazil. In Germany, we encountered Katharina Fritsch's reality-challenging sculptures. In Korea, we encountered Kimsooja's immersive installations of light, texture, and sound. We also featured emerging talents like Christina Quarles and Ana Segovia, showcasing their innovative impact on contemporary art.

Abstract Art and the Quest for Peace: Hilma af Klint and Anna-Eva Bergman

Abstract art transcended linguistic and cultural barriers to evoke a universal sense of peace. The seminar delved into the fascinating intersection between abstract art and the profound theme of peace, tracing the evolution of abstraction from the early 20th century to the present day. We examined how various artists used this powerful language to articulate, explore, and promote peace.

We journeyed through the evolution of abstract art, discovering how it served as a peaceful counter-narrative against global turmoil and societal upheaval. We explored the works of seminal artists, including Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Hilma af Klint, and Anna-Eva Bergman, who laid the foundation for abstract art as a medium for spiritual harmony and universal balance.

Through Her Lens: Hannah Höch, Dora Maar, and the Photomontage Revolution

Dora Maar and Hannah Höch, two trailblazing female photographers, redefined the visual language of the 20th century. Over three weeks, we delved into the art, lives, and pioneering techniques of these remarkable women who reimagined the photographic canvas.

The course transported us through the vibrant corridors of the Dada and Surrealist movements. We uncovered how Maar and Höch not only shaped but also challenged these movements with their groundbreaking approaches to photomontage.

Women Painting Women: Faith Ringgold to Mickalene Thomas

Female artists have redefined the representation of women through powerful portraits. This art series celebrated the pivotal role of these famous women painters and artists in shaping the concept of womanhood throughout history. We examined a diverse range of remarkable female artists whose creative talent brought women's experiences to life in bold and evocative portraits from the mid-twentieth century to the present.

Through an international lens, we uncovered often overlooked women who significantly contributed to the artistic landscape after the Second World War. In a field traditionally dominated by white male artists, we shifted our focus to painting — a medium these women artists used to drive change and challenge the norm.
