Tropical Flair
Modern art and the "exotic"

Tarsila do Amaral

Join an intimate community for five lively discussions on Modern artists who captured tropical paradise in their work. We'll study diverse artists of different gender, race and ethnicity, and from both sides of the Atlantic, to uncover varied styles, perspectives and motivations to depict the "exotic." Together, we'll discover what their work reveals about colonial culture, and we'll explore how the tropics inspired new approaches in paint.

Topics of Discussion:

  • Tarsila do Amaral, a female pioneer of Latin American modernism

  • Henri Rousseau and the European vision of the tropics

  • Wilfredo Lam and the Cuban Modernist aesthetic

  • Gauguin's Tahitian women vs. Amrita Sher Gil, "Self portrait as Tahitian"

  • Loïs Mailou Jones, an African American in Haiti

  • And more!
