About the event

Art with Friends invites you to an inspiring event to celebrate the literary works of Elizabeth Block, award-winning author! Senior Editor in the Publications and Editorial Department at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Elizabeth will offer exclusive insights into her books. Hosted by Lauren Jimerson, this engaging session will feature discussions on Elizabeth's two notable books: "Dressing Up" and "Beyond Vanity."

On September 4, join us as we explore "Dressing Up: The Women Who Influenced French Fashion." Elizabeth will take us through the intricate world of late nineteenth-century French couture, revealing how wealthy American women, as consumers and influencers, played a crucial role in shaping the fashion landscape of the time. Discover the symbiotic relationship between couture and coiffure, and how these women’s lavish shopping habits and social performances impacted the French fashion industry.

Then, on September 6, Elizabeth will discuss her upcoming book, "Beyond Vanity: The History and Power of Hairdressing," set to be published on September 10. This riveting exploration of nineteenth-century American hair culture reestablishes the significance of hairdressing as a vital cultural and professional field. Elizabeth’s research brings to light the complex cultural meanings of hair and the significant role of hairdressing in the post-Civil War era, highlighting the contributions of women of color and the creation of iconic hairstyles.

These events are designed for anyone interested in the intersections of fashion, culture, and history. They offer a unique opportunity to celebrate the work of a distinguished author and gain new insights into the cultural narratives that shaped both American and French societies.

Join us for two immersive and enlightening sessions that bring historical narratives to the forefront of today's discussions on art, fashion, and gender. Don’t miss the chance to pre-order "Beyond Vanity" before its official release!
