About the event
Art with Friends invites you to meet award-winning author Elizabeth Block and discover the real history of fashion in hair in the US and France! Senior Editor in the Publications and Editorial Department at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Block will offer exclusive insights into the history of fashion and hair in the US & France. Hosted by Lauren Jimerson, these engaging sessions will feature Block's two notable books: Dressing Up and Beyond Vanity.
On September 4th, join us as we explore Block's award-winning book Dressing Up: The Women Who Influenced French Fashion. Block will take us through the world of late 19th century French haute couture, revealing how wealthy American women played a crucial role as consumers and influencers, shaping the fashion landscape of the time. Discover the symbiotic relationship between couture and coiffure, and how these women’s lavish shopping habits and social performances impacted the French fashion industry.
Then, on September 11th, join us for a book release party for Block's latest book, Beyond Vanity: The History and Power of Hairdressing, set to be released on September 10. Learn about 19th century American hair culture, including the complex cultural meanings of hair and the significant role of hairdressing in the postbellum era. We'll also explore the contributions of women of color and the creation of iconic hairstyles.
These events are designed for anyone interested in the intersections of fashion, culture, and hair! They offer a unique opportunity to gain new insights into the real women who shaped both American and French societies and women's history—unlike anything you'd see on Emily in Paris!
Join us for one or both immersive sessions that bring historical narratives to the forefront of today's discussions on art, fashion, and gender.
