Bold Strokes:
Women Painting Women

Bold Strokes Women Painting Women

Portrait by portrait, discover how female artists explored and invigorated the representation of women. This art series celebrates their pivotal role in defining womanhood throughout history.

Explore an exciting range of remarkable female artists, whose creative labor and talent have woven women's experiences into bold and evocative portraits, spanning from the mid-twentieth century to the present in this engaging art series.

Taking an international lens, we'll discover often overlooked female narratives that significantly contributed to the postwar figuration landscape. In a field traditionally dominated by white male artists, we pivot our attention towards painting, the very medium that has served as a platform for these women artists to drive change.

Bold Strokes Women Painting Women

We’ll cover a broad spectrum of artists from early pioneers including Alice Neel and Faith Ringgold, to dynamic new voices such as Apolonia Sokol and Danielle Mckinney, to today’s leading portraitists Amy Sherald and Mickalene Thomas. While varied in approach, style and subjects, what unites these artists is the central focus on women—their bodies, their expressions, their individuality.

Portrait by portrait, we’ll delve into how each artist explored and invigorated the representation of women. From nuanced complexities to raw authenticity to bold portrayals that challenge conventions of portraiture, this series celebrates how female artists have shaped the perception of womanhood throughout history.
