Art Gathering:
Experience Simone Leigh's Art Together

Art with Friends invites you to join us for a unique visit to the Hirshhorn Museum, where we'll immerse ourselves in Simone Leigh's sculpture. As one of the most important American artists of our time, Leigh's work resonates deeply with our community. While a small group of six from this community had the privilege of experiencing her art firsthand at the 2022 Biennale on the Venice with Friends journey, this visit to the Hirshhorn offers a wonderful opportunity for all of us to connect with her powerful sculptures. This visit is not your typical gallery tour - it's an intimate, self-guided exploration, filled with informal discussions and shared reflections on Leigh's impactful sculptures. We'll immerse ourselves in the raw power of her art, engaging in thoughtful dialogues as a group.

Doing art with Simone Leigh

About the Exhibition

Representing the United States at the 2022 Venice Biennale, Leigh now brings her critically acclaimed work to the U.S. audience. The exhibition is an all-encompassing display of her creations in ceramic, bronze, and video, narrating her artistic trajectory.

Leigh's work, grounded in Black feminist thought, emphasizes the experiences and narratives of Black women. Her art blends a diverse range of historical periods and influences from African and African diaspora traditions. The exhibition features three new bronze sculptures - "Bisi," "Herm," and "Vessel" (2023) - and the iconic "Satellite" (2022), a highlight from the Venice Biennale (pictured above).

Leigh's approach to ceramics and bronze challenges the traditional confines of these mediums, redefining their association with women's labor and domesticity. Her art, characterized by motifs like cowrie shells, braiding, rosettes, face vessels, and eyeless faces, invites viewers to ponder and reinterpret these forms.
